KENT BURDEN
Biographical Information
Kent Burden found his way to the world of fitness and wellness after
a devastating college football injury left him a paraplegic for nine
months. He was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan. In high
school he lettered in four sports-- football, basketball, track and
baseball, and was voted all-conference in football.
He attended Saginaw Valley State University and Western Michigan
University where he majored in Physical Education and Theater. He
played three years of college football as a wide receiver until the
gridiron accident ended his football career. After being paralyzed
from the chest down for nine months, surgery restored his ability to
walk. He spent years rehabilitating from the injury, and tried many
exercise modalities. During his lengthy recovery, he found Hatha
Yoga and the mat works of Joseph Pilates to be the simplest and most
beneficial restorative exercises. Meditation and visualization
increased his focus, balanced out the intense physical activity, and
enabled him to believe a complete recovery was possible. He has been
practicing yoga for twenty years and teaching yoga for eight years.
Kent’s specialty is combining conventional fitness with mind/body
modalities, which led him to create “Kent Burden’s Essential
Triangle,” a union of yoga, Pilates and meditation. With meditation
as a bridge between the more physical exercises, this powerful,
balanced combination of three modalities provides fitness for the
mind, body and spirit in dynamic, multi-length formats. The program
is available on video and DVD. “Kent Burden’s Weighted Power Ball
Workout” was released in 2004, and “Kent Burden’s Power Ball
Pilates” is due for release in summer 2006.
Kent has more than twenty-five years of fitness experience. He is
certified as a master wellness coach, personal trainer, and as a
Pilates instructor, Yoga instructor, Spinning instructor, Water
Fitness instructor, Systematic Touch Trainer and Massage Therapist.
As the Mind/Body Program Director at California’s famed Ojai Valley
Inn & Spa from 2000 to 2004, he taught 15-20 fitness classes per
week, and worked one-on-one with guests, including Oscar, Emmy and
Grammy winners and other celebrities and athletes. Kent created the
mind/body fitness program, which was voted by Spa Finder Magazine’s
Reader’s Choice Awards as one of North America’s top mind/ body
programs out of a field of more than 500 spas. His program was
considered to be one of the most innovative and diverse in the
industry. He was selected by SHAPE magazine as one of six premier

annually at the Shape/Men’s Fitness Mind/Body Cruise. His signature

Certification program levels I, II and III. In 2006 he was selected
