Is Sitting the new smoking?
If you smoked a pack of cigarettes a day would you think that going out and running a couple of miles would undo all the damage smoking does to your lungs? Most of us know better than that. Yet that’s pretty much the assumption most of us live under when we work at a desk all day. We sit at our desk hour after hour, doing our reports, looking at our emails, typing out our code, talking to clients and customers on the phone and basically sitting on our butts all day long trying to earn a living. Then maybe we head off to the gym or jump on the treadmill at home for an hour and think all is right with the world. Well according to the latest research all is not right with the world and all this sitting is shaving years off our lives. What’s funny is I remember back in the late 60s (yes I’m aware that i’m dating myself here) when my parents found out how unhealthy smoking was and tried to quit. It was the same story as it is now, total surprise, followed by denial, anger and finally resignation to the fact that they simply had to change their lifestyle.
