Ok guys, if you’re like me you don’t tend to put a lot of thought into which grooming products you buy. I’m better than my dad, who pretty much had a tube of Brylcreem, Mennen deodorant and a can of Barbasol shave cream in the medicine cabinet and that was it. But my choices tend to be influenced more by what brand has a good coupon in the Sunday flyers and who has a killer commercial running on ESPN. But if you’re concerned about your health it may be time to re-think how you choose your grooming products. While many of us think of our skin as “armor” that keeps the stuff all around us from getting inside us, that’s not really how skin works. “Your skin is enough of a barrier to keep fluids within your body” says Samuel Epstein, MD, author of the book Toxic Beauty. “But it also readily absorbs many things with which it comes in contact”. Recently a Toronto based nonprofit organization called Environmental Defence released a report that claims certain chemicals that are found in many popular shaving creams, shampoos, deodorants, aftershaves and lotions contain chemicals that have been linked to men’s health problems like sperm damage, cancer, obesity and birth defects. Keeping in mind that all these products spend a lot of time on your skin, um…Houston we may have a problem. The organization published their report as well as a list of toxic chemicals men should avoid when buying grooming products. The list includes:
- Butylated Hydroxyanisole
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate
But personally I don’t have time to spend all day standing in the drugstore aisle reading the list of ingredients on the back of my shave cream can, so I have chosen to go au natural. That’s right organic and natural grooming products. These products are becoming really popular and for good reason: they do a good job of keeping you smelling fresh and looking hot while lessening the chemical load your body has to deal with on a daily basis. Where can you get some of these products? Well Burts Bees, Every Man Jack and Aubrey Organics have a whole line of all natural men’s grooming products that include the usual suspects like shampoo, aftershave, deodorant and shave cream but they also have rejuvenating eye cream, face scrub, body butter, sun screen and even styling gel. With these products you can improve your health and still have game.
